The Daily and iTunes Subscriptions Coming In December?

news-corp-logo_0We brought it to you yesterday about something being in the air as far as a potential collaboration between News Corp and Apple in regard to an iPad news app.  This seems to be gaining some traction as a new report has the app set to be revealed on December 9.

According to John Gruber, both Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs would be in attendance at the possible event.  “This is not going to be a quiet launch,” Gruber notes, saying that it would be iPad-only at first.

Apple has oft been talked about to be developing an actual dedicated newsstand app for the iPad, but the Daily would still start off as your traditional third-party app.  Where does Apple play in this?  Their contribution would revolve around a billing change to be able to allow subscriptions in iTunes.  The structure of it isn’t known just yet, but it would be built into iOS, not just the accounting system.

As Electronista points out, how this would work without an update to iOS isn’t known just yet either, but perhaps Apple would allow News Corp some early access to APIs or even a temporary free publication until the plan would go into effect.  As mentioned yesterday, the possible pricing plan is said to be 99 cents per week.

Most know that publishers have been knocking on Cupertino’s door asking for them to adapt its business model for magazines, newspapers as well as other periodicals because they believe the current pricing structure just isn’t cutting it.

AT&T Lands Triple Profits; iPhone Subscriptions Drop

Perhaps it’s a sign that AT&T’s hold on the iPhone is finally starting to ease. Despite AT&T posting large profits in the 3rd quarter, only 24 percent of their iPhone subscriptions were from new customers, an all time low.

AT&T’s Q3 profits had risen on a more than favorable tax settlement as well as their selling their Sterling Commerce business-software division to IBM.  Granted AT&T did activate 5.2 million iPhones, an all time high, but as mentioned above, only 24 percent of those were new customers. 

In an effort to potentially make up for the loss of customers of the iPhone to other carriers, AT&T has mainly been focusing on upgrades, as well as placing focus on other smartphones, like those with Google Android’s OS as well as the Windows Phone 7.

Other tidbits from AT&T’s quarter:

-Average revenue from users went up 2 percent.
-Wireless data revenues which spanned from messaging, Internet access, access to applications and related services – shot up .1 billion, or about 30.5 percent from the year ago quarter to .8 billion.
-AT&T U-verse TV subscription totals jumped up by 236,000 to 2.7 million.

Rumor: Apple Still Considering Music Streaming Subscriptions

When Apple purchased music streaming service LaLa this past spring, the company’s faithful followers held our breath in the hopes of something great waiting a-tiptoe in the wings. turning red in the face, we knew in our hearts that Steve Jobs was going to let us in on ‘one more thing’ at an upcoming Keynote. Yes, streaming iTunes subscriptions would soon be upon us. Apple bought out LaLa in order to utilize their exisiting technology! In no time at all, we’d be enjoying our entire music collection everywhere we went, all served up from the coulds perhaps even from our MobileMe accounts. Life was looking pretty sweet.

We’re no longer holding our breath. Keynotes have come and gone. No announcment surrounding the introduction of a streaming service has been made. As we stand near the cusp of 2011, are we any closer to seeing our musical content on-the-hoof dreams come true? If the New York Post has their facts straight, we can tell you this: Maybe.

According to The Post, Apple’s iTunes czar Eddy Cue has been making the rounds of late, talking to a number of the company’s major music partners. Rumor has it that Cue is working to hash out an understanding with the company’s music partners that would allow for Apple to introduce a streaming music service similar to the one already being enjoyed by Spotify users. One of the Post’s sources have claimed that the service could cost subscribers between and per month.

Let’s hope that The Post’s unnamed sources end up being right.

Apple May Launch Newspaper Subscriptions for iPad

Just when many thought print media was going the way of the dodo, Apple released the iPad and content is exploding from every direction in the universe. From magazines, to newspapers, to television networks, the iPad seems to be the go-to device for delivering content these days. Now, Apple may have a few more tricks up its sleeves when it comes to newspaper subscriptions and the iPad.

According to a new article by the San Jose Mercury News, industry sources believe that “Apple is expected to announce soon a new subscription plan for newspapers, which hope tablets like the iPad will eventually provide a new source of profits as media companies struggle with declining print circulation and advertising revenue.”

Sources told the newspaper that Apple may be prepared to take a 30% cut of subscription profits (similar to the cuts taken in the iOS developer program).

“Publishers wanted to pay Apple a fee rather than a cut of subscription and advertising revenue, and are not happy with Apple’s terms, he said. They had hoped to offer app editions as part of subscription bundles that include print versions of the paper. Instead, they must use Apple as an intermediary with subscribers,” read the article.

According to the article, Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

Newspaper content in subscription form can be purchased through Amazon on the Kindle already, so it will be interesting to see if and how Apple’s newspaper implementation works.
